Who are you and what is your role here at Circe Law?
My name is Phil Bertaut. I’m the admin assistant for Circe Law.
At what point did you realise this is what you wanted to do with your career?
Well, I had recently retired, and I wanted something to occupy my time a few days a week. There’s no better way to do that than here, and it’s nice to see Jade on her journey having known her so long.
How has it felt to see Circe Law built up from the ground?
Great. It’s been really impressive to see what Jade has done here, and I’m so pleased for her.
What is the best advice you’ve received in your career?
I think the best advice was that I was always told to think for myself. My dad used to say, “If you’re stuck in a field on your own, what would you do?” and a co-worker I had from the National Coal Board said the same thing. That really stuck with me.
Who was your biggest inspiration growing up?
Definitely my dad. He always taught me that if a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing well. He really drilled it into my from a young age and gave me a good work ethic early on.
What do you think is the most important trait for a colleague?
Probably honesty and openness. I can’t stand liars. Above all, if a co-worker is honest and open with me, I’m happy.
Can you remember the first thing you bought with your own money?
It was a motorbike, actually. I was quite big-headed really, because when I booked my driving test, I also bought the motorbike because I knew I would pass, so when I did, I picked it up on the way home.
What do you like to do after a day’s work?
Well one hobby is woodturning. I’ve made pens, bowls, all sorts. It’s just a couple of very relaxing hours and it’s pleasing because you have something to show for it at the end.
What is your favourite author?
I read a lot of Clive Cussler. He does action and adventure books. I like the marine biologist character Dirk Pitt; I really find him interesting.
What’s the best thing about working at Circe Law?
I really like working for an old friend; there’s something about it that makes it feel like a family here.
